Depay finally out of Old Trafford

Dutch winger Memphis Depay has finally found a way out of Old Trafford, after Manchester United agreed a fee of £16 million, which could potentially rise to £21 million, with French giants Olympique Lyon. The fee is an initial £16m with add-ons. United have also inserted a buy-back option and sell-on clause. The deal is expected to be finalized on Thursday following a medical. He has already signed a four year deal.

Depay came to Old Trafford from Eredivisie side PSV in 2015 for fee of £25 million. Having been deemed the “next Cristiano Ronaldo” and also being given the famous number seven shirt, the winger never lived up to expectations and  saw his importance decrease under Louis Van Gaal during the 2015-16, and has had game time very difficult to come by under the leadership of Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.  In fact, the last and only time he started a game this season was in September 2016, in 3-1 EFL cup victory against Northampton Town. He was substituted after just 55 minutes. The winger hasn’t played a single game since November. He has made only four games this season, failing to register a goal or an assist.

While there were strong reports of him joining Ronald Koeman at Everton, it seems the Depay is almost a Lyon player. This confirmation after Lyon’s official Twitter page posted a photo of Depay arriving at the city. Lyon had initial bids of £9 million and £11 million rejected, but had a revised bid accepted and agreed to further add-ons on Wednesday.

In total, Depay made 53 appearances for Manchester United, scoring only seven times.
